Cathay Pacific Airways flight from New York JFK to Hong Kong diverted to Japan twice.

The flight #CX831 from New York JFK diverted twice to Japan instead to continue to Hong Kong.

Wednesday, October 9 2024 the Boeing 777-300ER (registration B-KQH) diverted to Osaka (KIX) after 13 hours and 49 minutes into the flight.

Few hours later, the same plane resumed the flight and landed in Hong Kong.

Two days later, Friday, October 11 2024, the Boeing 777-300ER (registration B-KPF) diverted to the same airport after 14 hours and 22 minutes into the flight.

Again, few hours later, the aircraft resumed the flight and landed at HKG Airport 4 hours late.

Why the flight #CX831 diverted twice to Japan?

Cathay Pacific Airways confirmed a flight from New York to Hong Kong was diverted on Wednesday due to a geomagnetic storm, a space weather event meteorology and IT experts said was capable of disrupting GPS navigation and signals.

But the meteorologist played down concerns about the geomagnetic storm’s impact over Hong Kong, saying the city was in a low latitude region and unlikely to be affected.

Cathay Pacific confirmed that flight CX831 from New York on Wednesday was diverted and made a “technical stop” at Osaka en route to Hong Kong.

But the flight path can also be over the North Pole with a flight duration over 15 hours.
