Tensions were expected to be high, also due to the fact that Turkish side Fenerbahce played away at AZ Alkmaar, just 40 kilometers (25 miles) from Amsterdam, with Turkish supporters known to support the Palestinian cause. 

Clashes broke out between pro-Palestinian demonstrators and Dutch police before the fixture who had reported “tensions” in several parts of the city in the run-up to the match, which Ajax won 5-0.

Police said 57 people were arrested and that due to unrest, police were still visible in the city.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday ordered two planes be sent to the Netherlands to bring home football fans following violent clashes in Amsterdam.

Netanyahu’s office said in a statement on X that “two rescue planes” were being sent “to immediately assist our citizens.”

The Boeing 777-200ER (registration 4X-ECF) departed Ben Gurion Airport at 09:45 IST and is expected to land in Amsterdam at 13:00 CEST.

Israel’s Channel 12 said the rocket caused delays in the landing and take-off of flights at the airport, but local media later reported that air activity had returned to normal.

Northern Israel experienced a rocket attack, prompting Ben Gurion Airport to take action.

Due to the severe security predicament, Ben Gurion Airport in Israel is redirecting incoming flights to different airports, as per media reports.

No departures are anticipated within the upcoming hours, as reported by The Times of Israel at dawn, mentioning the Israeli Airport Authority as the source.

Airlines are instructing passengers to verify flight modifications.

Previously, the Israeli military announced that Hezbollah militants in Lebanon were readying to fire rockets towards Israel. An alarm was triggered in northern Israel. At present, fighter jets are carrying out retaliatory strikes against Hezbollah targets in their northern neighboring country, as revealed by army spokesperson Daniel Hagari.

United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, British Airways and Lufthansa cancel flights following assassination of top Hamas and Hezbollah officials.

United Airlines is suspending its daily flights to Israel, beginning with the Wednesday night flight from Newark to Tel Aviv, as tensions in the Middle East escalate.

Delta canceled Wednesday’s and Thursday’s flights from New York.

British Airways also announced cancellations, though it is unclear if they are for the next 24 or 48 hours. The planes will stop in Larnaca and will not continue to Tel Aviv.

Lufthansa announced on Thursday, August 1, the cancellation of all its flights to Tel Aviv until August 8 at least.
