A close call was averted last week at Riyadh King Khalid International Airport in Saudi Arabia when an Air Atlanta Europe Malta Boeing 747 freighter, operating on behalf of Saudi Arabian Airlines mistakenly attempted to take off from a taxiway instead of the designated runway.

The Boeing 747-400 freighter with registration 9H-AKF was scheduled to operate flight SV-953 from Riyadh to Nairobi, Kenya.

According to reports, the pilots received clearance for takeoff from runway 33R, which boasts a length of 13,796 feet (4,205 meters). However, a critical error led them to line up on the significantly shorter taxiway K, measuring only 1490 meters (4880 feet).

Thankfully, the crew realized their mistake before a disaster unfolded. Despite reaching speeds exceeding 100 knots (approximately 185 kilometers per hour) during the takeoff roll on the taxiway, they were able to initiate a safe rejected takeoff procedure and bring the aircraft to a stop before reaching the end of the limited runway.

The incident, which is currently under investigation by Saudi Arabia’s General Authority of Civil Aviation (AIB) is a serious occurrence. The AIB’s investigation will delve into the factors that contributed to this mistake, with the aim of preventing similar occurrences in the future.

On February 20, 2021, a Boeing 747-400 experienced engine failure during its initial climb.

As a result, the engine emitted debris through the exhaust, which landed in the village of Meerssen, causing injuries to two people and property damage to houses and cars. The flight crew shut down the engine and landed safely at Liège Airport in Belgium.

Image

The Dutch Safety Board classified the incident as serious because of the chance of an accident. This is because the falling debris ended up in a village and caused the injury, reported onderzoeksraad.nl.

That injury could have been much more serious. By the Dutch Safety Board Kingdom Act and European Regulation No. 996/20102, the Dutch Safety Board investigated this serious incident.

REPORT: Boeing 747-412BCF experiences engine failure while ascending; incident occurs in Meerssen
REPORT: Boeing 747-412BCF experiences engine failure while ascending; incident occurs in Meerssen

Report by the Dutch government

The Dutch Safety Board investigated the risk posed to individuals on the ground following concerns raised by residents through letters and emails.

The concerns centered on the safety of the residents after injuries and property damage occurred as a result of the incident above. Residents rely on the government to manage risks associated with the Maastricht Aachen Airport for their safety.

The airport is perceived as unsafe due to its location between residential areas and its use for commercial air transport services, including flights with heavy cargo aircraft. The incident has further exacerbated the residents’ sense of insecurity.

As per ICAO Annex 13 guidelines, the survey included the following organizations: the Dutch Safety Board, which represented the country where the incident occurred.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) represented the country of design and manufacture of the Boeing 747 and the Pratt & Whitney PW4056 engine type.

In addition, the NTSB has appointed designated representatives and advisors to Boeing Commercial Airplanes, Pratt & Whitney, and the United States Federal Aviation Administration.

The British civil aviation investigation body, the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB), represented the airline’s country and the country of registration and appointed an authorized representative and advisor from the airline Longtail Aviation.

The report is in Dutch, and it states the various reasons why it occurred and what led to this failure. They have included data from the engine manufacturers and also added the readings.

The giant aerospace companies have a duopoly in commercial aviation. They are always compared with each other. Both published the final March results yesterday. The first quarter went well for them.

Boeing Quarter Report

Boeing has surpassed Airbus by delivering 130 jets during the first quarter of 2023, compared to Airbus’ 127.

This marks the first time since 2018 that Boeing has outperformed its European rival. This achievement signifies a positive turn of events for Boeing, as aircraft production has returned to normalcy following several years of disruption.

The first quarter deliveries of 2023 increased by almost 27% compared to the previous year, in which only 95 aircraft were delivered.

In March 2023, Boeing delivered 64 aircraft, with 53 being Boeing 737 MAX. This is an improvement from March 2022, when only 41 aircraft were produced. Southwest Airlines and United Airlines each received 12 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft in March.

Moreover, Boeing received 60 new aircraft orders in March, with only 22 cancellations. Most deliveries comprised the Boeing 737 family, with 113 out of the 130 737 family aircraft. Boeing’s Seattle Everton factory is expected to produce 31 737 jets monthly.

Despite experiencing a slowdown in January and February due to a pause in the delivery of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Boeing was still able to deliver 11 Dreamliners.

Boeing resumed its deliveries in the middle of March and delivered 7 Dreamliners that month. In addition to these, Boeing also delivered one 747 aircraft, one 767 freighter aircraft to Federal Express (FX), and four 777s.

Airbus Quarter Report

During the first quarter of 2023, Airbus delivered 127 aircraft, marking a 9% decline compared to the same period in 2022. The reduction in Airbus deliveries was partly attributed to engine shortages for its short-haul Airbus A320neo family aircraft.

However, Airbus plans to increase production at its Tianjin, China assembly facility from four aircraft per month to six after renovating it to manufacture the A321 aircraft.

Airbus received more orders than Boeing, with 142 orders after cancellations, as opposed to Boeing’s 38 demands. Boeing’s order book included 40 charges of 737 MAX aircraft and 20 787 aircraft.

Boeing experienced some cancellations, including 16 MAXs and six 787 aircraft. Nevertheless, it succeeded in selling its first 737 MAX aircraft to Japan Airlines in late March, beating out Airbus with its Airbus A320neo aircraft bid.

Japan Airlines (JL) announced its intention to purchase 21 737 MAX aircraft, with deliveries expected to begin in 2026. In the past two months, Boeing has received commitments for over 200 787 Dreamliners from Air India & Riyadh Air.

Bottom Line

Airbus plans to deliver 720 jets in 2023, while Boeing plans to have 400 737 MAX jets and 70 787s.

Although Boeing is on track to exceed its 737 MAX delivery goal, it will need to increase production of the 787 Dreamliner to deliver 70 aircraft. This represents an increase from the 480 planes born in 2021.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) concerns that malfunctioning bathroom faucets on the Boeing 787 Dreamliners may cause water to penetrate the aircraft’s critical electronic systems.

As a result, the agency is suggesting that all 787s in the United States undergo repeated inspections. This is because the FAA has received reports that water from the lavatory has been leaking onto equipment bays beneath the cabin floor on several 787s operated by one airline.

However, there is a disagreement between Boeing and the FAA about how prevalent the issue is across currently active 787s.

Why it’s concerning?

According to the Associated Press, Boeing informed airlines about the problem of leaky faucets in November. The FAA stated that one airline discovered a wet carpet in the cockpit of one of its planes and subsequently inspected its entire fleet of Boeing 787 jets, finding the issue on multiple aircraft.

Boeing has attributed the problem to a faulty O-ring in a bathroom faucet, which causes a slow leak of approximately eight ounces of water per hour.

The company claims that the problem is limited to a specific batch of 787s. However, the FAA is advocating for safety measures to be applied to all Dreamliners currently in operation.

According to reports, the FAA is proposing to conduct regular inspections of all Boeing 787 Dreamliners in the United States. FAA is concerned that leaks from the bathroom faucets could result in water seeping into the plane’s flight-critical electronics. Furthermore, this may lead to a “loss of continued safe flight and landing.”

This proposal will be open to public comment for 45 days before it can become an official FAA order.

The proposed order would apply to the 140 Dreamliners in the U.S. carrier fleets. It is intended to be a temporary measure until Boeing develops a permanent solution for the faulty faucet modules.

Reuters has reported that the FAA had previously halted the delivery of Dreamliners for a month starting in February due to a data analysis error.

However, after the recent suspension, Lufthansa (LH) received the first delivery of a Boeing 787. Despite these issues, Boeing claims that it is observing an unprecedented demand for the Dreamliner.

The flag carrier of Turkey, Turkish Airlines (TK), makes an emergency landing after an engine fire. The bird strikes the left engine of the Turkish aircraft.

The Turkish Airlines flight TK2015 operating Boeing 737-900 ER, had to return to its origin amid engine fire. The TK flight bound from Kayseri Erkilet Airport (ASR) to Istanbul Airport (IST) was hit by a bird shortly after takeoff.

According to Radar Box, the TK Boeing 737-9F2 (ER) took off at 3:16 PM UTC and was on track to land at IST. However, shortly after takeoff, a banging noise heard, and the left engine was on fire.

The pilot declared the emergency, and after dumping some extra fuel, it made an emergency landing at Kayseri Airport (ASR). The plane’s airborne time is 50 mins, and it landed back in Kayseri at 4:04 PM UTC.

Emergency landing

The Twitter page Hava Sosyal Medya has shared the footage recorded by a passenger onboard the TK2015 flight.

ATC notified the airport ground fire and rescue service. They were prepared with all the firefighting equipment and ambulance. Luckily plane landed safely at Kayseri Airport, and all passengers departed.

In recent times, the incident caused due to birds are rising. Furthermore, we are frequently getting news that a bird strike leads to an emergency landing.

The passenger onboard stated that ” a loud noise (like an explosion) was heard during the takeoff of the Turkish airline flight, and a flame appeared in the left engine.”

In Jan 2021, Turkish Airlines (TK) Boeing 777F struck a flock of birds during takeoff from Istanbul Ataturk airport. The aircraft suffered visible damage to the radome along with the pilot tube.

However, after suffering the damage, the crew stopped the climb at 5000 feet and entered a holding pattern before returning to Ataturk Airport. Subsequently, the aircraft made a safe landing some 45 minutes after departure.

Niceair (HFM) suspended all operations and cancelled all flights starting today.

Þorvaldur Lúðvík Sigurjónsson, the Managing Director (MD) of Niceair, told mbl.is.The company has not yet decided whether its staff will be laid off.

Unfortunately, due to the foreign operator of the airline, HiFly defaulted to the airline’s owner and lost its only aircraft. Niceair is forced to cancel all its flights and suspend its operations.

Executive Thoughts

He mentions that they cannot sell tickets until they secure an airplane. Furthermore, they have been actively searching for one day and night recently. The spokesperson remains optimistic that a solution will be found before the summer.

The situation has made it inconceivable for the airline to fulfill its commitments to its passengers. However, the company had good results in the past year, a strong booking position, and good prospects for the future. It is now in a place that prevents it from providing the planned services.

“In light of the progress made and the positive outlook, as well as the successful completion of a financing round to support ongoing operations, it is unfortunate that the outcome for the company has been disappointing. Since June of last year, the company has been operating regularly scheduled flights between North Iceland and Copenhagen and Tenerife, achieving a 71% capacity rate,” said MD.

He added, ” Since we began operating this service, we have established its significance and found that the local market has exceeded our expectations in terms of strength and efficiency. Weather-related disruptions have been rare, with anomalies occurring in only 2% of our flights.”

During the winter season, the Akureyri airport did not pose any issues, and flights were safely operated despite challenging weather conditions. The MD, Sigurjónsson, expresses his regret over the unfortunate outcome for everyone involved and apologizes for any inconvenience caused to customers.

Unfortunate Fate

Earlier today, Virgin Atlantic announced that it would suspend services between London Heathrow, Lahore, and Islamabad.

Some airlines, Flybe, Flynr, and Viva Air (Colombia), have suspended their operations this year. At the same time, some airlines have flagged off their maiden flights.

The Niceair suspension of operations came to be a shock. As post-pandemic many airlines are recovering and adding capacity. Some even placed historical orders to expand their network.

Airbus CEO announced on Thursday that the European company would open a second final assembly line in China, which will double its production capacity in the country.

This move is due to the increasing demand for air travel in Asia, particularly from the expanding middle class.

The new assembly line for Airbus’s A320 medium-haul jets will be in Tianjin and will begin operations in late 2025.

Airbus CEO Faury signed the framework agreement for the new site at a ceremony attended by French President Macron and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

During his visit to China accompanying French President Emmanuel Macron, Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury announced that the company would open a second final assembly line in China to double its production capacity there.

Faury believes it is a strategic move to serve the growing Chinese market and other regional customers. The first assembly site in Tianjin is currently producing four A320s a month, and Airbus plans to increase that rate to six a month this year.

The new assembly line, located in Tianjin, will begin operations in late 2025 and produce Airbus’s A320 medium-haul jets.

Airbus Expansion Plans

Last year, a Chinese aircraft received domestic certification and were expected to start commercial operation early this year, although it includes imported key components.

Airbus established a factory in Tianjin, China, in 2008, primarily focused on the assembly of the A320 and producing A321neo.

Since then, the factory has delivered more than 600 aircraft, as per the Airbus website. The Chinese government has often utilized aircraft purchases to balance bilateral trade.

After the US trade war began in 2018, Boeing’s sales in China declined. The sales dropped even further after two fatal crashes in Indonesia and Ethiopia, resulting in Chinese regulators grounding Boeing’s 737 MAX planes for almost four years.

In 1985, Airbus debuted in China by delivering an A310 to China Eastern Airlines. As of the end of Q1 2023, the number of Airbus aircraft in China has surpassed 2,100, accounting for over 50% of the market share.
