WestJet cancels dozens of flights after hailstorm damaged 10% of its fleet

WestJet Airlines is grappling with the aftermath of a severe hailstorm that struck the Calgary airport area last week, causing substantial damage to 16 of its aircraft.

The airline has been forced to ground 10% of its fleet, leading to an average of 50 flight cancellations per day throughout August. The hailstorm inflicted significant damage to multiple fuselage areas and flight control surfaces of the affected planes.

According to WestJet, a detailed assessment of the damage revealed that sourcing specialized equipment and materials for the necessary repairs and inspections would take several weeks.

“We understand the immense frustration this is causing our passengers, and we apologize for the inconvenience,” said Diederik Pen, WestJet’s chief operating officer. “Safety is our top priority, and we are committed to returning our fleet to full operation as quickly and safely as possible.”

To mitigate the impact on travelers, WestJet has been proactively canceling flights to manage passenger expectations and avoid last-minute disruptions. The airline is also exploring alternative options, including increasing flights operated by WestJet Encore and partnering with Canadian North, to reduce cancellations.

While WestJet anticipates a gradual decrease in cancellations as repaired planes are being gradually returned to service in a phased approach, passengers are advised to check their flight status regularly and allow extra time for travel during this period.

The Canadian public is bracing for an extended period of travel disruptions as WestJet works diligently to restore its fleet to full operational capacity.
