A coordinated protest by climate activists from the Last Generation group brought chaos to four German airports on Thursday morning.

The group claimed responsibility for disrupting operations at Berlin, Cologne-Bonn, Nuremberg, and Stuttgart airports, with images showing activists glued to the tarmac.

While the activists did not enter runway areas, their actions led to temporary flight suspensions and delays. Nuremberg Airport, for instance, halted flights for over an hour, resulting in cancellations and diversions.

Moreover, Cologne-Bonn Airport resumed operations after a brief shutdown but experienced ongoing delays.

The brazenness of the protests has ignited a fierce debate about airport security. German politicians have intensified calls for enhanced protection measures after similar incidents at Frankfurt Airport last month. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser labeled the activists’ actions as “dangerous and stupid.”

Last Generation has vowed to expand its campaign across Europe and North America, demanding a global agreement to phase out oil, gas, and coal by 2030.

As the climate crisis intensifies, such disruptive protests will likely become more frequent, raising questions about the balance between civil disobedience and public safety.

England football fans faced a frustrating detour on Monday after their Eurowings flight from Berlin (BER) to Manchester (MAN) made an emergency landing shortly after takeoff due to an “undefined odour” in the cabin.

The Airbus A319-132 aircraft with registration D-AGWF, operating flight EW8470 diverted to Berlin, where it was inspected by fire crews who found no signs of fire or smoke. While safety concerns are paramount, passengers expressed anger at Eurowings’ lack of communication and aftercare following the incident.

Passengers claimed that they were left stranded in the airport with minimal information on rebooking or next steps. Social media users reported a lack of Eurowings representatives to greet them and frustration with the airline’s request not to document the incident.

One passenger quoted a flight attendant as saying, “Please don’t take photos, we don’t want bad press on social media. Well, will you kindly provide someone to speak to about what we do next?”

Another passenger stated, “There was no Eurowings rep to meet us from the plane. You literally just bunged us all back into the airport with no communication whatsoever.”

Eurowings, on the other hand, stated that all passengers were informed via SMS about the flight delay caused by the “unscheduled return” due to the “undefined smell.”

The lack of clear communication and apparent disregard for passenger concerns has overshadowed the safe landing and inspection. This incident comes on the heels of England’s heartbreaking loss to Spain in the Euro 2024 final, adding insult to injury for the returning fans.
