A Lufthansa flight landed at Mexico City’s Felipe Angeles Airport only 30 km from Mexico City International Airport.

A Lufthansa Boeing 747 from Frankfurt landed 30 km away from its destination.

The flight #LH498 departed Frankfurt Monday, September 16 2024 at 14:05 CEST for a 12-hour flight to Mexico City International Airport.

While on approach to MEX airport, the Boeing 747-800 (registration D-ABYT) entered a hold at 16,000 ft.

A severe local thunderstorm with wind gusts up to 43 kt and ceiling under 800 ft prevented the aircraft to land at Mexico City International Airport.

The decision was taken to divert to Mexico City’s Felipe Angeles Airport (NLU) which is only 30 km from MEX Airport.

Three hours later, the Boeing 747-800 had to do the ferry flight from NLU to MEX. A 21-minute flight as the plane had to perform the return flight #LH499 from MEX to FRA.
