Frankfurt Airport temporarily suspended flight operations

On Thursday morning, Germany’s busiest airport, Frankfurt, experienced a temporary halt in flight operations due to a climate protest. A group of activists glued themselves to the runway, forcing authorities to suspend all air traffic for a period.

The protest, carried out by a climate change advocacy group, aimed to draw attention to the urgent need for action to address the climate crisis. The activists argued that the aviation industry is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and called for immediate and drastic reductions in air travel.

Due to the incident, about 140 flights of the 1,400 flights scheduled for today have been canceled so far. However, further delays and cancellations can be expected during the day. Therefore, the airport authority has requested all the passengers to check the status of their flight on their airline’s website before traveling to the airport.

Due to a protest by several activists from the group "Last Generation", air traffic at Frankfurt Airport had to be suspended for the time being. Several planes were diverted to other airports.

“We sharply condemn these unauthorized demonstrations and we reserve the right to take legal action against the participants. Their activities pose severe danger to flight operations – possibly putting human life at risk. These illegal activities represent a dangerous interference with air traffic. The perpetrators face severe penalties and high civil claims for damages.”

Frankfurt Airport spokesperson.

While the disruption caused significant inconvenience to thousands of passengers, the protest has sparked a wider conversation about the environmental impact of air travel and the role of civil disobedience in raising awareness about pressing global issues.

As of now, Frankfurt Airport has resumed normal operations. However, the protest group has vowed to continue its actions until more substantial steps are taken to combat climate change.
